Product Description

Initially matured in a French Chardonnay cask, this single malt has been finished for 14 months in a former Monbazillac cask, which has created a wonderfully sweet whisky.

The Monbazillac wine growing region in south east France is renowned for its intense sweet wines, similar to sauternes. Monbazillac is traditionally made from ‘noble rot’ grapes of the Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle varieties, which are harvested by hand.

This whisky was distilled in October 2016 and bottled in January 2023. The single cask gave 473 (500ml) bottles.

Colour: Golden brown

Nose: Very spicy and sweet with aromas of dried figs, cinnamon, wood, toasted almonds, stewed cherries and buttered biscuit.

Palate: Very intense, sweet and fruity with accents of forest honey, liquorice, cinnamon bun, caramelised pear, crème brûlée and a nice wood spice.

Finish: Long and intense, getting a little drier with flavours of nuts, molasses and wood, with the spiciness coming back nicely.

Further Details

In the 1850s, Jakob Baumberger, a successful brewer, founded a distillery in the Swiss town of Langenthal. Whilst the family's business in brewing prospered, they were eventually forced to close the distillery during World War II due to rationing measures. The ban on the distillation of grain and potatoes was not repealed until 1999, and with that Hans Baumberger, Jakob's great-grandson, decided to pursue his ancestor's distilling dream. Starting on a small scale, Hans distilled his first spirit in 2005. Langatun has quickly gained a first class reputation for their wine and sherry cask matured Swiss single malts. In 2014 Langatun moved to a larger site, a 400 year old former Kornhaus, or grain store.
